Fluoride

Fluoride is a mineral found in varying levels in all natural water sources. Fluoride acts to remineralize the enamel layer of teeth creating a surface more resistant to decay or cavities as well as potentially reversing the process of early tooth decay. Water fluoridation programs exist in many localities across the country, this process adds fluoride to public water sources. This allows for fluoride to be added to the body systemically where it can be incorporated into forming tooth structures making the teeth more resistant to cavities. It is very important for young children whose permanent teeth are still developing to have systemic fluoride so their permanent teeth are as strong and healthy as possible.

Topical fluoride applied to the teeth once they are in the mouth helps to repair demineralized enamel and can reverse the early stages of decay or cavities. The most common methods of topical fluoride delivery are toothpastes, mouthwash, and fluoride treatments offered in the dental office. In office fluoride treatments are beneficial to all patients, not just children. We encourage everyone to have fluoride treatments at their maintenance or cleaning appointments.

Fluoride toothpaste used twice a day when brushing is the best way to apply topical fluoride to your teeth. Fluoride toothpaste is safe to be used as soon as you begin to see the primary teeth break through the gums. For children aged 0-3 years use only a smear of toothpaste on the toothbrush, no more than a grain of rice. For children 3-6 years old use a bee bee or small pea sized amount of toothpaste containing fluoride. Always monitor your children while brushing their teeth and discourage swallowing of toothpaste. The amounts listed above are safe if swallowed, but children should not be left unsupervised with the entire tube of toothpaste.

At your next dental visit ask if you are getting exposure to enough fluoride and ask about getting a fluoride treatment. Call us for a visit today 540-639-6688
