Pregnant?

All expectant mothers should continue to see their dentist regularly to maintain their own dental health during their pregnancy. It is safe to have a dental maintenance appointment or cleaning any time during the pregnancy. The dentist would prefer to avoid doing any other procedures such as fillings or extractions during the first trimester. During the first trimester many of the key developmental processes are occurring in the womb and it is safer to wait until the second trimester to perform any necessary dental work. By the time the third trimester arrives, it is usually uncomfortable for the mother to be in the dental chair but certain procedures can be performed to alleviate pain and discomfort.

Radiographs, or x-rays, are safe to be obtained on expectant mothers on an as needed basis. Fairlawn Family Dental prefers to avoid radiographs during pregnancy as much as possible, but if they are needed for diagnostic purposes we use the proper safety precautions and obtain the image we need. If radiographs are required, we use the proper lead apron shield to protect the growing baby and mother.

Hormone levels rise significantly during pregnancy beginning at the second month. This change in hormonal levels can cause a condition called gingivitis to develop on the gums in response to plaque buildup on the teeth. Increased progesterone levels cause the gums to have an exaggerated response to plaque buildup making the gums red, puffy, tender, and bleed easily. This is why proper oral hygiene needs to be maintained during pregnancy to prevent gingivitis as much as possible, in serious cases the dentist may recommend the mother see the dentist more frequently during her pregnancy.
